Het handelt over een van het front terugkerende republikeins soldaat.(Amerikaanse burgeroorlog)die bij thuiskomst uit jaloezie zijn naar een andere vrijer overgestapt verloofde vermoordt en gestraft wordt met de galg. Wel een triest verhaal maar toch een leuk lied ten tijde van mijn jeugd.
Het is mijn eerst radiohit, omdat tot ik tot ongeveer mijn 12e in een huis woonde zonder elektra. Dat kon toen nog. Daarna bij komst van een radio niet gewend waren hier naar te luisteren. Vandaar de late kennismaking met deze toen grote hit. (hitlijsten hadden we nog nooit van gehoord).
